Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken - Ad

Wanchai Ferry Orange Chicken

These photos and descriptions come courtesy of reader Amy Hill.

Looks: “There’s some room for variation here, since you have packets of sauce/rice/chicken/vegetables and have to put them together yourself, so if the chicken doesn’t get as brown as on the package that might just be your fault for not following directions. Still, it looks almost exactly like the package (note that the IRL photo shows only one serving, while the package shows two).” 5 out of 5

Taste: “Sweet and spicy sauce; good amount of vegetables; not greasy at all. Better than a lot of Chinese takeout, even. My one complaint is that the servings are a bit small for the price.” 4.5 out of 5

Special K Honey Nut Bar - Ad

Special K Honey Nut Bar

Looks: Real-bar looks exactly like box-bar. Stay tuned for the taste rating… 5 out of 5

Taste: Welcome back! This bar is kind of dry, kind of sticky, and kind of tasty – just what you’d expect from an amalgamation of nuts pressure-fitted into the shape of a brick. It’s definitely not on the level of a FiberPlus Dark Chocolate Almond Bar, but if you like nuts, you’d be nuts to pass up this bar. (See what I did there?) 3 out of 5

Oscar Meyer Fully Cooked Bacon - Ad

Oscar Meyer Fully Cooked Bacon

Looks: It’s boring to write about foods that look just like their packaging. I bet it’s boring to read about too, isn’t it? 5 out of 5

Taste: Eaten alone, it’s obvious that this bacon was not freshly cooked on a sizzling griddle: it’s kind of rubbery and pretty salty. But if you overcook it a little in order to crumble it over baked potatoes, a thick chowder, or a late-evening Pop-Tart, you won’t be able to tell the difference between this and “real” bacon. 3.5 out of 5

Hormel Meat Loaf - Ad

Hormel Meat Loaf

Bonus picture of the entire meatloaf, post-cooking:

Hormel Meat Loaf In Tray

Looks: I did not expect this to score any higher than a 3, but what can I say? Once it’s sliced, the meatloaf in the box matches the meatloaf on the box. 5 out of 5

Taste: While it’s not the best meatloaf I’ve ever had (that honor is tied between my mom’s meatloaf with cheese on top and the lamb meatloaf at Santorini), it’s surprisingly good for only taking four minutes to microwave. It was a little oily, and the meat grind was overly smooth, but I would probably buy this again if I’m ever in the market for pre-made meatloaf. 3.5 out of 5
