Hormel Compleats Roast Beef & Gravy

Looks: Nothing about the way this looks makes me want to eat it. The gravy is translucent (not thick like on the cover), yet there’s so much of it that you can’t see through it to the potatoes below. The potatoes appear to be a single solid mass, rather than fluffy mounds, and the roast beef slab lurks near the surface like the carcass of a dead Loch Ness monster. None of these things are depicted on the box. 1.5 out of 5

Taste: Craptacular. Even with all that gravy, the beef is so dry that I needed to continually drink bottles of water while I chewed it to avoid dehydration. The potatoes are nasty (closer to modeling clay than vegetable), and the gravy wouldn’t stick to them. I managed three bites of this “Compleat” meal before throwing it away – I didn’t feel comfortable feeding it to my dog. I suppose I should have known it would be terrible; it’s roast beef that you store in your pantry… That’s just not right. 0 out of 5

Three bites!!! Why two more after the first? šŸ™‚

    That’s just horrific.

    OTOH… It’s “Ready in 90 seconds!” THAT’S a great marketing point.
And nothing on the package promises anything about how it tastes.

I had some chicken dumpling thing from them and the same thing happened. I really tried to eat it but it didn’t work. It was just gross. I thought I was going to puke.

I’m so glad you did an entry on one of these Compleats. I’ve been contemplating buying a few, but will be sure to steer clear now. Thanks!

I tried to soldier on to give the most accurate review possible. One bite of beef, one bite of potatoes, and one bite with both.

I walked to the back of a 7-11 to get a soda and saw this sitting on a shelf and had an instant /facepalm. What came to mind was back when I was younger and used to go barhopping, I have many times gotten my late night “dinner” at 7-11 and in my drunken stupor this prolly woulda looked like a wise choice. Thank God I am all growed up.

I actually have a couple of these in my desk. Some are complete crap, but others are actually alright.

The chicken Alfredo one is good, Swedish meatballs is alright, and the spaghetti one is alright.

These are N-A-S-T-Y! I tried the Chicken and Dumplings…It tasted tart and very artificial. I also tried the salisbury steak and it was chewy and sour-tasting and tasted NOTHING at all like salisbury steak! Steer clear from ComplEATs.

  14. Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher

I do not know how they can stay in business with the prepared dinners. I have tried the meat loaf, the Spinach and Artichoke Dip, the Chicken and Dumplings and Spaghetti. They all do not tasted good and they oddly all kinda taste the same ….and not in a good way. The convenience of them would be wonderful but I really don’t know who repeats purchasing these meals .
